Mexican Riviera, Second Port - Mazatlan

We sailed across the mouth of the Sea of Cortez and made our first call to the mainland of Mexico!
We had heard of Mazatlan (and like most people, mispronounced it!) but had never been there before.
Again, being unfamiliar with the area, we used a ship's excursion.

From our balcony, we could see the city. Not knowing we would be there soon, we noticed the Cathedral spires!

Unfortunately, we did not get to visit this large, and lovely church

We could also see the preparations on the pier to welcome arriving visitors

These lovely women, dressed in traditional party dress posed with each passenger

We got to pose with the Frog - don't know if there is a message there or not!

We boarded our bus and were taken a short distance down the coast to a beautiful overlook

This lighthouse is atop the hill in the previous photo

Theresa and Janet were busy looking at things offered by vendors

We were treated to a cliff diver from this perch
Theresa caught this amazing video!

The view toward the city center was nice

We passed many beautiful sculptures along the way

This is a statue of a popular actor depicting him as a motorcycle cop

We stopped at this one.

Unfortunately, the water was turned off

We saw a number of very nice houses overlooking the bay

With this view, who could blame them?

This cave - "Cave of the Devil" - was popular among the younger set but so many got hurt playing there, they locked it up

No, not a whale or seal - a diver going down for someone's dinner! They mark their location with an inner tube

We finally arrived at the Cathedral!

The front is adorned with various statuary, al honoring St. Mary

This statue depicts Blessed Juan Diego showing his cloak, now imprinted with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, to the bishop, who kneels in reverence of the miracle

The Sacred Heart of Jesus

Even the lamps were very fancy!

Our Lady atop the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

This frieze of the Last Supper decorates the front of the main altar

The main altar . . .

is lit from above and is bathed in the colors of Mexico when the sun shines!

We were taken by this beautiful crucifix

Religious statues in Mexico are often clothed and have gold cinctures

The Cathedral received support from a wealthy Jewish man and in gratitude, all 28 stained glass windows are adorned with a Star of David.

Next to the 14th Station (Jesus is laid in the tomb), this glass sarcophagus depicts the dead Jesus

Immediately in front of the Cathedral is a large courtyard

with all kinds of vendors (but NO souvenir sales) and people relaxing

We then went to a jewelry store where we were treated to complimentary drinks

We did see several interesting and unique sculptures

We finally went for lunch on the beach!

We were in the main part of the building, not the table literally on the beach!

Our view during lunch!

Pacifico Cerveza!

Theresa was fascinated by the doorless taxis! (This one just outside our restaurant)

Mazatlan is the shrimp capitol of the world and you can buy bags of shrimp at street stands

We could always count on a towel animal to greet us at night!

Tomorrow - Puerta Vallarta
