Napier
- November 1
Napier
was demolished by an earthquake in the 1930's.
The
ruble was bulldozed into the bay and what is now the esplanade along
the waterfront was once water!
The
ship was only to be in port a few hours, scheduled to depart at 2 PM,
so we just went into town to see what was about!
The
entire town is done in art deco - a style popular in the 30's
|
The
park along the waterfront is a wonderful world of flowers and
walkaways
|
Peggy
|
This
fountain forms the centerpiece of the main park
|
At
the end of one end of this part of the park is . . .
|
.
. . this floral clock!

& Peggy from the water entrance to the park
|
The
town from the park
|
A
wonderful garden a little further down the waterfront
|
Part
of the first park is the end that ends in the bandstand in the
background
|
Bill
had fun with the nude statue!
|
This
fountain is further down toward the aquarium
|
This
water wheel is just for show
|
The
fountain at the aquarium
|
They
had the oddest pine trees where the branches grow up instead of
drooping!
|
The
buildings all reflect the art deco style
|
Bob
waits for the girls - checks for Wi-Fi on the notebook
|
Bill
& Peggy with a most unusual sculpture archway
|
More
unusual sculpture
|
A
shuttle train for visitors - but was not running the day we were
there
|
Want
to see the city in an unusual way? Try this V-8 motorcycle!
|
The
main drag through the city is a partial pedestrian walkway ( a
driving lane winds down through - kind of an unusual twist) that
extends several blocks
|
With
some very nice sculptures
|
We
accepted an invitation handed us on the street for a wine tastingin a former bank building
|
The
wine shop was interesting but, unfortunately not the wine
|
The
Anglican Cathedral across the street
|
Another
interesting sculpture
|
An interesting name for an ice cream shop
|
Pipers
entertained
|
One
had a modern electronic tuner!
|
Vintage
vehicles were all over, including this Buick Roadster
|
Two
Vespa motor-scooters
|
An
old Ford truck
|
An
Austen (before Healy came on the scene yielding the Austen Healy)
|
Back
on the pier, a row of cars greeted us as we returned
|
Along
with a jazz band
|
Later,
Chef Thomas and Kiersten had another cooking demonstration
|
The view from our veranda as we pulled out of port
|
At
the show we listened to a Chinese singer who was quite talented but
spent too much time in prattle
|
