Wild Animal Park

We met our friend Pat Halligan and drove to the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park - about 20 minutes north of the city.
When we first arrived, Pat suggested we purchase a zoo membership. Entry to both the Zoo and Wild Animal Park are included and two guest passes come with it. So for $69, Theresa and I got into the Zoo and Wild Animal Park! It would have cost that just for the Zoo for the two of us!

Many of the animals are the same you see at the zoo, but the setting is quite a bit more open and spacious. Many of the animals share spaces and roam much more freely than they are able to do at the Zoo. This shot is from an overlook tower and shows a small fraction of the areas that the animals have to roam.

They have a number of options - you can actually board a stake truck and roam among the animals! We opted for a tram that drove alongside the animal areas but might do the truck on a future visit!

Lots of really cute animals . . .

And some beautiful yet ominously dangerous ones as well!

The rhinos were in the same space as the giraffes and gazelles and they pretty much ignored one another. When one of these rhinos wandered toward a reclining female giraffe, however, she got up and got out of his way!

The newest arrival was this baby elephant, born just a few weeks ago.
We were told that an elephant carries their baby for two years and the baby weighs several hundred pounds at birth! Also, when the mother gave birth, she bellowed so loud it woke the campers who were sleeping in the zoo's tent camping area nearby!

This silver backed gorilla male is huge and seldom moved. He did move when his teenager came over behind him. I'm not sure what she did to him, but 5 minutes after she arrived, he rose and went in the cave!

This okapi is using her long tongue to pull leaves off the tree. We were told while at the zoo that the okapi is a relative of the giraffe and can actually reach its ear with its tongue!

We walked several miles since the park is much more spread out than the zoo, but it was well worth it! This is a great place to see animals.
