Whale (and Ship) Watching

We put to sea on the Minnow - oops, I mean the Marietta, a round bottomed little vessel that rolled with the waves! We stood up front (on the foc'sle for you tars) to get the best view.
We figured we'd see a whale or two, but this day we would see lots more!

First, as we passed the sub base, we saw this submarine tied up.

We also passed Connor's America racing yacht - past winner of the America's Cup. They now take folks out whale watching and were on the way back in.

We saw these guys, apparently seals from the nearby Amphibious Base on Coronado.

It doesn't get much prettier than this!

The Hotel Del Coronado has the new (1969) Coronado Bridge as a backdrop. This hotel has appeared in many movies and still is a "destination" hotel.

Just for the record, we did see two whales. I only got a photo of the second, but it was a fin whale - a rather unusual sighting. Our guide from Birch Aquarium was quite excited!

The sea lions really seemed to appreciate the rest platforms the Government put in for them and don't seem to mind if the ships use their rest platforms to navigate by.

On the way back in, the dolphins rode the pressure wave of the bow of the boat. The dolphins love to play and can go fast with very little work. One smaller dolphin (probably a teenager) kept jumping over (probably) mom's back. On the last jump he did a "victory roll!"

The Navy was very active on this particular day. We saw ten or more ships in the area.
This guided missile destroyer is very similar to the one we toured a few days ago.

As we approached the pier, we got this great view of Midway!

On the shore again, just next to Midway is a park dedicated to the "Greatest Generation."
We couldn't resist reprising the event of this famous VJ day kiss on Times Square.
