Birch Aquarium sits high above the coast at LaJolla.
The Scripps Pier is a favorite place for surfers.
The aquarium is great with everything from jellyfish - glowing in the UV light . . .
To this spiny fish that, while beautiful, is dangerous to touch.
This lump in the sand is a grouper, whose eyes grow on one side of its body as a result of it lying on the bottom all the time. I love grouper but have no idea how they catch them!
The seahorses are great! They have a fixed mouth with no jaw movement.
As a result they can only suck in whatever will fit through their snout.
They wrap their tails around something and sway with the currents while they suck in food.
We lucked across a feeding. The attendant fed several of the fish by hand!
(You can see his fingers poking through the water and the fish eating the food from his fingers.)
It was funny - in this tank the fish went nutsy for the food as soon as he opened the hatch.
In the next tank, they hid!
This seahorse was so funny - it looks like something maybe a class designed.
More like a cartoon character than a sea creature!
And of course, no aquarium trip would be worth it it without Nemo!
The signage indicated as much and acknowledged that the Clown fish has become one of the most popular fish since the movie "Finding Nemo."
When the aquarium closed, we drove to LaJolla Shores and had a great risotto dish at Piatti, a neat little Italian restaurant, then returned to the Aquarium for a lecture on the study of ocean currents and conditions by CalCOFI - California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations.
When we got back to Naval Air Station, North Island, we drove out near the carriers and caught this great picture of the San Diego skyline at night. USS Midway is bear the center of the photo with her dress lights - what we called "Med Lights" since we only rigged them while at anchor in the Mediterranean ports. A great way to finish a good day.
Tomorrow, golf (weather permitting)
