Paris Day 2 10/6/2011 - The Louvre Museum& A Walkabout

We started our day with mass at a local chapel just down the street from our hotel

We then boarded our bus and rove to the Louvre Museum, entering in the lower level

Our guide Veronique herded us thru the security screening and into the museum   The following is a series of photos from our tour thru the Louvre. I'll add captions and comments only if I know something special about the objects. If you wish to skip all this stuff and go to the end where we did a "walkabout" you won't hurt my feelings!

The Louvre is built over an old fortification. These excavations revealed the moat.

Many sculptures

Including, of course, Venus de Milo

And winged victory

As in many museums, there is much more on hand than there is room to show!

The wise men pay homage to the infant Jesus

St Francis receives the stigmata - the wounds of Christ

The martyrdom of St Stephen

Diana - Goddess of the hunt

An unusual depiction of the last supper?

And of course, The Mona Lisa! You can see the reflection in the protective glass of the throngs of people around this famous painting!

The Pyramid at the new entrance is still quite controversial. This shot is taken from the wing of the museum.

The coronation of the queen by Napoleon

The hardships of the Russian campaign

St Joan of Arc

Suzanna from the book of Daniel baths as two lecherous men watch. Daniel proves the maid's innocence by questioning the two. They are condemned for false accusations

The mother of the revoultion

This sculpture amazingly depicts a gauze veil over the woman's face!

When we finished at the Louvre, we were on our own, so we took the Metro to Gare Lyon where we plan on returning our car at the end of the trip. We located the Avis return and boarded Bus #63 to find Hotel Familia, a nice hotel in the Latin Quarter recommended by friends. We saw the hotel but stayed on the bus until we got to the Invalides. Then we were on foot
The bridge figures close up during a walkabout

The building built as a hospital by Napoleon

We walked to the Eiffel Tower

A statue at the base commemorates Eiffel

An interesting view from directly beneath

And from across the river

A short walk up the hill brings us to Arc de Triumph

Which sits at the top of Champs Elysee

The Arc contains the French Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Paris is the City of Light - and of Love!

A stroll on Champs Elysee takes us past Cartier . . .

. . .  and Swarovsky . . .

. . . . and McDonald's!!!

And this Peugeot beauty . . .

 . . . at Peugeot Avenue!

Street Dancing!

Looking toward the Louvre & Obelisk . . .

. . . .  and back toward the Arc de Triumph

The obelisk from in front of the President's residence

The Church of St Mary Magdelene
Jesus being baptized by St John the Baptist

The main altar
As we neared the restaurant for dinner, we noted that the chairs in the sidewalk cafes always are in pairs and always face outward for "people watching"
We ed our second full day in Paris, appropriately with a "drive-by shooting" of the Louvres
