Egypt and the Eternal Nile
Day 3 - 22 March 2019
Abu Simbel
We leave Cairo, at least for the time being!
Pre-dawn departure from the hotel (the Disco is still going strong!)
Early morning flight to Aswan, then a three hour bus ride through some desolate desert!
A stop at a little coffee shop |
Lots of options |
Sara, Vallee and Nancy |
This part of the desert is famous for mirages |
A floating rock! |
"It'll fool a thirsty man!" The Kingston Trio "You've Got To Prime The Pump" |
OK - this is real water! The shores of Lake Nassar at Abu Simbel |
When it became clear that many antiquities would be lost forever when Lake Nassar filled, the world responded with stunning successes. |
These two temples to Ramses II and his Queen Nerfretari were sawed into manageable pieces, brought up to this promontory and reassembled! You can hardly see the seams! |
These door pulls on the entrance building caught our eye! |
We'll return to this permanent outdoor theater later for a light show |
As we walked back up to the ticket area, we took the alternate route and happened on our boat, MS Prince Abbas! |
They literally had the red carpet out for us! |
Very nice boat! |
She's a good feeder! |
Top deck lounge where we had tea each day at 5 PM! (They offered iced coffee!) |
Close up of the bar on the top deck |
Aft on top deck was a wonderful outdoor lounge |
And a pool and hot tub We never used either |
The dining room floor level was below the water line and the windows were just above the water line |
Elegant table was matched by equally good service from the staff |
Each time we returned to the boat, we were greeted with a refreshing wet cloth and a drink of some juice or another |
We all were in "Junior Suites" |
Nice and spacious. Limited electrical outlets! |
I actually used our little "lounge" space to upload photos at the end of each day! |
Group photo! Back to the Temple seating for the light show. We bought the DVD and I look forward to watching it again! They used photos of the hieroglyphics and motion of the images to tell the story of Ramses II's great victory |
Back to the boat via the back route
Tomorrow: Sailing on Lake Nassar Visiting several other temples saved from the flood waters! |
