Scotland - Kirkwall - Friday 13 Nov 2015

Today, we will explore Kirkwall on foot. Lots to see close by the waterfront. If the ferry runs today, we'll ride it to Stronsay. If not, Mrs Delday says we are welcome to stay with her one more night!

We begin the day at St Magnus Cathedral.  Magnus was the Earl of Orkney but was a gentle peace-loving man. He refused to participate in a raid as "I have no quarrel with them." He was ultimately martyred for his Christian beliefs.

An angle guards the gate to the cemetery

Inside is pretty much an ordinary cathedral layout

Plenty of tombs

some quite ornate - here Dr John Rae, Arctic Explorer

A memorial to HMS Ark Royal, torpedoed and sunk in Scapa Flow not far from here

This marker looks more like a pub sign than a grave marker!

The graveyard outside has many conventional graves

Ruins of the Earl's Palace, built in 1607 by Patrick, Earl of Orkney

The ruins of the Bishop's residence

The library was nearby and since our B&B had no wifi, we hunkered down here for a few minutes

This sculpture may depict a waitress in action or any mom doing her daily juggling act!

We then headed over to Tesco (think Walmart) to buy some goods for on Stronsay

The ferries remained tied up as high winds limited boating.  The locals thought that cancelling ferry service for such a light breeze (30 knots gusting to 45) was ludicrous

This is the view from our walk to Mrs Delday's

The Kirkwall City Building

The entrance is guarded by two militia (statues)

Mrs Delday's Lerona B&B is at the end of a quiet cul de sac

This fountain is right at the door

This garden extends out the front and is delightful

We walked to town for Fish & Chips

The line of locals speaks for itself.  Nearly everyone was eating "takeaway" - we were one of two groups dining in.

You order at the counter, pay, and have a seat

This selfie ends the day. Tomorrow, Stronsay!
As it happens, we did go to Stronsay on Saturday afternoon.
We had a delightful dinner at the Stronsay Hotel and renewed our acquaintance with Chris & Debbie Allen. We stayed in the St Magnus house owned by the monastery but were happy to see Chris & Debbie again.  We were concerned that the ferry would not run on Monday, so we came in on Sunday evening and stayed in a B&B down by the transportation center.  (As it happens, the ferry did not run on Monday, so good call!)
Quite honestly nothing of interest occurred on Stronsay that is appropriate for a blog, so we'll pick up the blog in Dublin on Tuesday.
